The Mutual Fund Tracker Data Shifter, Version 3.6
The Data Shifter program was written because our users had requested a
tool by which they could create new data groups or customize their own data
sets using existing data. The Data Shifter will enable you to copy the
complete price history of a fund from one data set into another data set.
You will be able to create new data sets or overwrite existing data sets using
current data.
To run the program, place the MFTSHI36.EXE program into your Mutual
Fund Tracker directory and type:
MFTSHI36 [PATH] and press [ENTER]
The [PATH] is where the data group is that you want to change or work
with. For example: MFTSHI36 C:\MFTRACK\DATA1 would work with the data group
in the C:\MFTRACK\DATA1 directory. If you want to work with the data group in
the DATA2 directory, you would type: MFTSHI36 C:\MFTRACK\DATA2
The directory names listed above are for example only. The names of
your data directories may be different.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have run the program you will be asked:
"Do you want to add data to an existing data set [Y/(N)]?"
If you answer "Y" then you will be changing the data that is currently
available to you. If you want to move data around in an existing data set,
then select "Y" at this question.
If you answer "N" then the program will automatically create additional
files with the extension .TMP, in your directory. If you want to create a
customized Data Group, then select "N" at this question.
After you answer this question, this is the menu that will come up:

Use your arrow keys to select a data set to COPY FROM and press <--' [ENTER]
===============================================================================
You will notice that it is very much like the main menu of The Mutual
Fund Tracker Program. You will be able to see a complete listing of all
six data sets and the contents of each data set by moving the highlight bar
with your arrow keys.
Use the arrow keys to select a data set to copy FROM and press [ENTER].
After the data has loaded, look in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
The program is indicating what data set you are copying FROM.
Now use your arrow keys to select a data set to copy TO and press
[ENTER]. You will then be shown a listing of the existing funds to COPY FROM
as indicated below.

After you have selected a fund number to COPY FROM, you will be asked
for the number of the position you will want to COPY TO in the selected data
set. You will be free to arrange your newly formed data set as you wish.
Below is an example of the screen that you will be entering your new list of
funds into.

Keep repeating the process until you have copied all of the data you
wish to copy from that data set. If you wish to continue copying from the
current data group, simply load another data set at the main menu. The "COPY
TO" remains the same, while the "COPY FROM" changes. Thus, you may copy a
whole selection of fund histories from all six data sets into a single data
set for your customized viewing!
When you have finished working with this particular data set and wish
to return to the main menu, simply press [ENTER] at the question:
"Enter fund number to copy from:"
This will take you back to the main menu.
If you have finished working with this data group you may consider the
following exiting statements:
"Save the New Data Set and Quit"
This command will save the data set you are working with and quit the
program, returning you to the DOS prompt.
"Save the New Data Set and Continue"
This command will save the data set you have been working with. The program
will ask, "Do you want to work with an existing data set (Y/[N])?", make your
selection and then continue.
"Quit and Don't Save the New Data Set"
This command will exit the program, returning you to the DOS prompt without
having saved any of your changes.
"Restart and Do Not Save the New Data Set"
This command will restart the program, and discard all changes you have made.
The program will ask, "Do you want to work with an existing data set (Y/[N])?",
make your selection and then continue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you chose to work with an existing data set, then your changes have
been recorded and you are ready to run the Mutual Fund Tracker to view your
changes.
If, however, you chose not to work with existing data, the program
created the data set(s) for you. If you are finished working with The Data
Shifter program, then exit to the DOS prompt and move your newly created data
set(s) to a working directory. Simply, use the DOS COPY command to place the
new data into its own supplemental working directory. Then use the DOS RENAME
command to change the file extension name from .TMP to .DAT so that The Mutual
Fund Tracker will recognize and work with the new data files. Please
reference you DOS manual for the proper use of these commands. Here are the
steps you will need to take in setting up your supplemental working directory.
Step 1: You will now need to set up a secondary configuration file for this
new data group. To do this we will need to run the installation program
(MFTINST.EXE). We will need to change to the directory where The Mutual Fund
Tracker installation program is. This directory also holds The Mutual Fund
Tracker program. For example, At the DOS prompt type:
CD C:\MFTRACK and press [ENTER]
This is an example and your directory name may be different but you should
now be in The Mutual Fund Tracker directory. Run the install program by
typing: MFTINST at the DOS prompt and press [ENTER]. If you get a DOS error
message that says "Bad command or file name" you are in the wrong directory.
When you run the install program it will ask you if you are installing this
version for the first time. Answer "N" for no and press [ENTER]. The program
will ask you to type in the directory name to place the configuration file
into. This should be the same directory name that you copied the newly created
data group into. We will use the directory name (DATA2). So we will type
DATA2 and press [ENTER]. The program will ask you if it needs to create the
new directory. You should answer "N" if the directory exist or "Y" if it does
not exist.
PLEASE NOTE: Even if all six data sets do not contain data, you must have
all six in each supplemental working directory you set up or The Mutual Fund
Tracker will not work with that working directory and data group.
Now answer the questions as you did when you first installed the program.
When you have completed the installation, you will see the "How Things Stand"
screen. If everything is correct, then press [ENTER].
Step 2: Run The Mutual Fund Tracker program. At the DOS prompt type: MFT
and press [ENTER].
Step 3: To work with your new data group, select Function Number 7
Utilities, Choice (4) Change Data Directory. Follow the instructions on the
screen to change to the data directory of your choice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for using The Mutual Fund Tracker and if we can be of any
assistance in using this or other utilities, please let us know.
